Greetings GUSland!
Mr. DeBry, I think I'm speaking for the majority here, so a vote would
be a waste of time. The popularity of the GUS *is* growing, perhaps
faster than we'd humbly admit, so traffic on the digest is thickening.
Someone suggested a "Professional" digest, as opposed "Music". Grouping
things like sampling, patch rendering, composing and multimedia wouldn't
neccesarily be construed as professional but do tie more comfortably to the
concept of music. I suggest an "UltraSound Audio Digest" <mute point> to
cover ALL aspects of the GUS, except game-related queries and posts. This
would help to reduce 1) digest-general overlap (i.e. where to get Dram,
etc.) and 2) most of the traffic on the current digest and 3) which digest
should I post this !#?!%? question to. Yes, those general-type
questions ought to be the resposibility of the Audio Digest, and yes,
when all those kidz finish school next year, the Digest will shrink, but
most of us have only so much time, patience and email save-message space.
Hypothetically, if a was a freshie GUSser, knew _squat_ about the FAQ &
these digests and wanted to get general info QUICK, I'd probably subscribe
to the Audio digest, and wade thru about 1/4 of the rasterwork as now...
And to Gunnar Swanson... you still here? Thought you were going to take
the more travelled PAS... (less travelled?) What inquiring minds
__**REALLY**__ want to know is why you would care if the list is split,
given that you are no longer and active GUSser... :-[

Greetings--
Just a quick question- I got my GUS back in July, and unfortunately
only got the 2.05 disks. I downloaded the 2.06 disks, but miss Powerchords
and Recording Studio.
My question is if anyone knows if there will be any more 2.06 mailings, or
am I stuck until the next upgrade comes out? (Possibly without Powerchords?)
(Gravis are you listening? <g>)
It looks like I will end up splurging for Power chords Professional, since
I am very eager to do some drum work.
Any ideas/comments welcome.
p.s. I am FOR the digest split.

I think it would be a better idea to create a GUS newsgroup instead of
splitting the digest. Reading the digest, to me, is now just scanning it
until I reach the subject I find interesting. Why not create a newsgroup
so we could all do it efficiently.

Subject: GUS + Views
Hello, I've had my GUS for 3 months now - reading the Digest for 1 month, figured I'd throw my .35 cents into the mix.
Maybe I'm one of the few, but I've had no problems at all with my GUS.
I use it for midi and mods mostly. I play 3 games (Links, Jn golf, wolfenstein) and the GUS works with those.
I ordered the midi interface and recieved that, am on the next mailing to get Powerchords and Midisoft.
So far no problems.
Splitting the Digest: I guess I lean twords the guy who say make a comp.sys.soundcard.gus, and do it that way. Splitting would be fine.
After awhile it does drag, reading how to get Xwing or whatever game to work.
But then new people are getting into the GUS every week - so I guess it is needed info.
Only dissapointments: A good mod editor - Yes I have em all, the all use different formats, different sounds (.sam, .smp, etc).
To be honest, haven't seen one as good as MED is for the Amiga.
I like the Ultratrakker, but after awhile it decides not to read in the directory listings.
Guess thats my .35 cents for now..........

I just saw in my sunday paper an ad for the GUS card at Best Buy. $128
is a reasonable price for retail! Just to let you know it is becoming

Subject: Halloween Harry from Apogee
I just picked up Halloween Harry from Apogee.
The game only supports the SB, so I ran SBOS
with it. I get sound and it loads fine, but every so
often it makes a weird digital noise ! Can I fix this ?
I am running S-BOS 2.08

Subject: list split.
I will make this concise and to the point.
A list split is foolish for the following reasons:
1. The volume of this list is not excessive. Most of us have access
to terminals with a fast connection to a mail server of some type, so
paging through unwanted articles is not a problem.
2. Many of us have vague or off topic but still important questions
that may only be answered by someone reading the other half of the
digest.
3. Games/Music is not an appropriate division logistic (this is similar
to #2). You need Games/Music/Programming. No, wait. You need Games/
Music/Programming/OS2/Win-NT/Midi/etc/etc/etc. Soon the lists become
40 because games/music leaves a lot to the imagination as to where
to post a lowlevel register question, and the huge split in topics
causes 85% of them to be useless. This kills the digest and all its
users, and advocacy. If the death doesn't happen, what will result
is a consolidating back to a single newsgroup or digest, much like we
have now, to save the support.
4. Sometimes interesting things are found by perusing other types
of articles.. somebody not into music/midi may find they want to try
it after all after reading some articles concerning it.
5. If it's not broken, don't fix it. I don't think this is broken,
or anywhere even slightly close to broken. If I start reading 4000-10000
line digests, then I will consider a solution stated above.
My 2 cents. This and 48 more cents will get you a coke.

Subject: PAS16 Native support...
I do not have a list at hand, but I can say for sure that Strike Commander
has native PAS support, and I am willing to bet that all Origin releases
now have PAS support.
The point is that while the PAS16 may not have native support in older
games, it will still work, since it also has the SB circuitry on-board,
and does not need to emulate it with a TSR such as SBOS. I feel that this
is where the GUS lost out. Yes, Wave Table Synthesis is much better than
FM synthesis (I actually wrote a review of the UltraSound for the Tokyo PC
Users group newsletter, all the way back in January, and I highlighted
this point.), but the sad fact is that the software industry is slow to
catch on to this. Since I installed the PAS16, I have no trouble
what-so-ever with compatibility problems. I have also bought myself a SCSI
CD-ROM to complement the PAS16. When it arrives, I will attempt to make
the PAS16 and GUS co-exist, as I firmly believe the UltraSound will get
the support it deserves (I also said that in my review in January). From
reading all the reponses from various software developers over the last
week, I am confident that the UltraSound is going to catch on in a big way
over the next year. Until the UltraSound has widespread support, I simply
can't afford to *only* have the UltraSound installed. In my opinion, SBOS
is a joke, not because of lousy programming or anything, but because it is
a software solution to a problem that starts at the lowest level of hardware.
I am currently studying Computer Science (Software Engineering) at
University, and when I get around to writing in sound support for any
programs I do, I will most likely only support 16-bit cards. At this stage
my choices would be PAS16, GUS, and SB16. The original SB and even the
Pro, are getting very old by todays standards, and I see little point
supporting them in any programs that I care to write.
What I would like to see in the near future is for Gravis to stop
supplying SBOS with the UltraSound. It was only meant to be a temporay
solution until GUS support picked up. I think Gravis just underestimated
the staying power of FM based cards. I suspect that when SBOS is no longer
required, the time will be right for my GUS to be reinsyalled along-side
the PAS16.

K.S. Holly,
Can't help you with NHL Hockey, but with FS 5.0, I hafta set
_synthesized_ sounds rather than digital, then sbos works fine. I understand
there's some kinda sound problems (dropout or stutter) even for real
soundblasters.
OK, now I've got one <sigh>; anyone happen to know how to get
Genie's Air Warrior to work with sbos? Only works with -o3, but still,
engine drops out after 10 seconds.

G'day, how are all you fellow GUSers going.
I am posting to tell about my most religous GUS experience yet.
Myself and two fellow GUS owners set up a mini ASSEMBLY'93 of our own
here in our residential college at the University of New South Wales,
Australia.
We hooked up my 486-33 to a Yamaha Surround sound amplifier hooked up to
two Paradigm 200w speakers and 3 surround sound speakers.
The room was like a mini cinema, with rows of couches for seating.
To put it simply, the sound of Second Reality was the most incredible
experience I have ever had.
You could FEEL the GUS. The chairs were SHAKING with the beat of the
hypnotic music created by the legend Purple Motion. All Hail Future Crew.
People who new nothing about computers wandered into the theater, hearing
the music from outside. They sat down totally amazed at the fidelity of
the sound and quality of the graphics.

YOU HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED LIFE UNTIL YOU VIEW
SECOND REALITY WITH A VERY GOOD SURROUND
SOUND SYSTEM.

The PURE UNADULTERATED POWER of the GUS is not shown untill you pump
it through a huge sound system.
I then went back to my old sound system and played the demo again and
nearly died. The sound quality seemed so poor in comparison to Second
Reality on a $4000 stereo system.
Words cannot portray ones emotion felt after viewing the demo with
this equipment.
Thankyou GRAVIS. Thankyou FUTURE CREW. Thankyou fellow GUS users.
PS. Silverball is the best game ever. It is the best pinball game I have
ever seen, and the gus sound is incredible. The routines are done by
Joshua Jensen, of GUSMOD. We played this on the surround system with
the bass turned right up, and you could feel the bumpers shake the chairs !!!

slightly unusual, but nothing spectacular - works with all my other
software)

Emm386, lots of drivers and things (no, it didn't work with a 'clean' boot
either)

Some things:
1) Split the digest, I'll take both
2) When the Guy at Id Software (sounds like a great game title to me)
mentioned that they will be doing mixing in software, it was _to play
multiple sound effects on the SB_. He was basically saying, "Yeah, we
support the GUS, but we play multiple sound effects on the SB too". I would
hope that these fellows would realize it's easier and more efficient to pop
their sound effects into ram and let the GUS mix them, so I'll assume they
meant what they said: that they're using software mixing _on the SB_. We'll
just have to wait and see.
3) The daughterboard is going to cost so much because it's made from much
better parts than the ultra-cheap 16 bit sound cards like SB 16 & PAS 16.
When thinking about those boards, keep in mind that the cheezy music
chipset is hardly the only place they skimped. It's rumoured that the chips
on the daughterboard are the same ones on the Turtle Beach MultiSound.

SBOS. THe game uses MOD files, and obviously doesn't work
with SBOS for the same reason most old SB demos don't.
